“PCIe 5.0 (Gen5) compatible NVMe SSD” whose sequential read speed has finally entered the realm of over 14,000MB/s (14GB/s). It’s easy to get caught up in the overwhelming numbers in the catalog specs, but when you actually incorporate them into your own PC, you need knowledge of thermal design'' and lane distribution,’’ which are fundamentally different from conventional Gen4 SSDs. We will explain how to make wise choices and investment techniques based on the latest market trends in 2026.
Illusion of catalog specs: Is there a difference in experience during daily movements?
Although Gen5 SSD has doubled from the 7,000MB/s range, which is the fastest Gen4 SSD, the difference in OS startup time and general game loading time (excluding DirectStorage compatible titles) is only less than 1 second. Gen5’s true power is demonstrated in workloads that demand extreme I/O throughput, such as 8K multicam editing of RAW video, loading huge local AI model (LLM) weight files, and bulk transfer of large data sets.
The biggest challenge: “Explosive heat controller” and thermal throttling
Power consumption and heat generation cannot be avoided when talking about Gen5 SSDs. The controller temperature easily reaches 80°C to 90°C under high load, and without proper cooling, thermal throttling (forced deceleration for protection) will occur within seconds and the controller will plummet to speeds below Gen3.
- Operation without a heat sink is strictly prohibited: There are many cases where the heat dissipation cannot keep up with the standard thin heat plate that comes with the motherboard.
- Cooling options: A passive heatsink with a large heat pipe in the 2-3cm thick class or an active cooling cooler with a small built-in fan is recommended. It is also extremely important that the airflow inside the case (direct air from the front fan) is strong.
Be careful of the M.2 slot exclusive specifications on the motherboard side
Many motherboards (Intel Z790/Z890 and AMD B650/X670/X870) have an exclusive specification that limits the main graphics board slot (PCIe x16) to x8 lanes when PCIe 5.0 x4 is enabled on the first M.2 slot. The golden rule for avoiding trouble is to check the motherboard manual in advance to see how the latest high-end GPU will affect the bandwidth.
After determining the purpose and heat generation measures, let’s introduce next-generation ultra-high-speed storage.
